AGENCY DESCRIPTION :

The New York City Board of Correction (BOC or the Board) is a nine-person, non-judicial oversight board that regulates, monitors, and inspects NYC's correctional facilities. The Board conducts independent oversight and enacts regulations to support safer, fairer, smaller, and more humane NYC jails. The City Charter mandates the Board's five functions: Establish and ensure compliance with minimum standards "for the care, custody, correction, treatment, supervision, and discipline of all persons held or confined under the jurisdiction of the Department of Correction" Investigate any matter within the jurisdiction of the Department Review grievances from person in custody and staff Evaluate the performance of the NYC Department of Correction (DOC) Make recommendations on areas of key correctional planning.

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The Board's Executive Director (ED) oversees a 31-person staff and a $3 million annual operating budget. The ED develops and implements operational strategies that further the nine-member oversight board's mission to support safer, fairer, smaller, and more humane NYC jails; coordinates monthly public board meetings; and oversees all functions concerning legal, policy, regulatory affairs, compliance, monitoring, research, risk management, board governance, human resources, and IT matters; and ensures a workplace that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Board's General Counsel/Deputy Executive Director (GC/DED) manages the legal team and all functions relating to regulatory, policy, appeals, and special investigations. The GC/DED provides strategic advisory support to the ED on contractual and all agency matters, manages relationships with the NYC Law Department and pro bono counsel, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and city law.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of BOC's Executive Director, the Summer College Executive and Legal Intern will work directly with the Executive Director and General Counsel on special projects concerning board governance, strategic planning, and legal matters. They will prepare internal memorandum advising the Executive Director on issues impacting the NYC Board of Correction (BOC) and persons in custody in NYC jails. They will assist in preparing the Board members for the BOC public board meetings during the summer months; attend the public meetings and prepare summaries of comments and actions taken during the meetings; research and propose amendments to BOC's minimum standards for conditions of confinement in NYC jails; participate in policy discussions; and contribute as a thought partner with the Executive Director and General Counsel in brainstorming strategic initiatives. The internship will be 10 weeks in duration, beginning on June 2, 2025 and ending on August 9, 2025. The intern will work a 35-hour week.

QUALIFICATION, SPECIAL SKILLS:

The ideal candidate is an undergraduate student or recent college graduate able to demonstrate the following:
  • Strong writing, research and project management skills,
  • Ability to complete work with attention to detail and handle sensitive information in a professional manner, and
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
