POSITION TITLE: BUS MONITOR REPORTS TO: TRANSPORTATION AREA SUPERVISOR OVER-TIME STATUS: NON-EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 403 JOB SUMMARY: Performs responsible semi-skilled human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; does related work as required. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Bus Driver. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assists bus driver for the purpose of handling emergency situations until the driver can take over; Assists special education students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations; Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers; Prepares reports (e.g. seating chart of assigned riders, incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines; Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for their action; Secures students and/or their equipment (e.g. restraints, checks wheelchair tie downs, seat belts, opens ramp, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students; Performs related tasks as assigned. JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: General knowledge of the transportation of students; some knowledge of transporting handicapped students; ability to assist students with patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, public, associates and students; good physical and mental health. Ability to assist students with special transportation needs such as wheelchairs, braces, crutches, etc. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
